About the Coach
University of Alabama Head Track and Field Coach Harvey Glance has seen it all, done it all and coached it all. His name is forever etched in the record books for being the fastest man in the world. In 1976 he he held the world record for the fastest 100 meter dash and in 1978 he held the world record for the fastest 100 yard dash. He is a 16-time All-American, three-time Olympian and 1976 gold medal winner.

His coaching accomplishments are equally impressive. Glance was the head track and field coach at Auburn University from 1991 until 1997, and since then has been the head coach at the University of Alabama. He has guided his athletes to earn 171 All-American honors and trained several Olympians. He has also coached numerous highly successful international track programs.

Coach Holloway has a firm belief that the warm up is a key factor in hurdle training and success.

In part 1, Holloway shares an 11 exercise routine specific to hurdlers that assist in not only warming the body but also loosen the hops and back in preparation for technique and drill training.

In part 2, Hurdle technique, Holloway discusses strategic essentials for getting to the first hurdle, emphasizing his slow to fast philosophy that applies to running the hurdles. He also shares the basics of the start with detailed specifics for block placement and how to get out of the blocks with good explosiveness while maintaining a focus on sustaining good ground contacts and carrying a sprint form. Dennis Nobles utilizes two former All-American athletes to demonstrate the finer points of the long jump.

In Part 1 of this presentation, Coach Nobels shares Long Jump Menchanics. Nobels begins with a thorough explanation of the biomechanical challenges through turning the body into a projectile off of the runway sprint. He next reviews three "distance determinants" that are essential to understand for maximal jump performance. Nobels shares his mantra of on task, on time and on target to describe the importance of developing consistency with the first step. Next, Nobels breaks down the run and details stride numbers for various levels of athleticism and age. He shares a drill he uses with his athletes to develop a consistent feel for hitting the board consistently without having to detract from the approach and watch the board as it is approaching. Nobles covers the technical aspects of the last runway step and details the proper take off angle. The "in the air" phase is the next breakdown area. Nobels teaches the skill sets for a hand and hitch kick flight, and provides a simple 3-step drill that quickly teaches an athlete how to execute the hitch kick. The final technical breakdown is the landing.

In Part 2: Strength Development, Nobels delivers 12 different exercises, including the proper mechanics of three Olympic lifts: Squat, Clean and snatch.

In part 1 of this 3-part presentation, Mike Pullins narrates the technical breakdown of all phases of the high jump. Coach Pullin's instruction is greatly enhanced with demonstrations for two former USC All Americans that including an NCAA champion. Uniquely, each demonstrator has a style that is his own, one a taller lanky athlete and the other shorter and throughout the instruction details the differences with these two body types. Pullin's breakdown begins with the approach and he shares tips for placing marks for consistency. Included in the technical phase breakdown are the approach, running the curve, specifics for the penultimate step and over-the-bar positioning and landing. Tips and nuances are abundant throughout the demonstrations.

In Part 2: High Jump Drills, Pullins shares 13 drills that are specifically designed to help the high jumper train for the event. Implementing these drills will greatly enhance each phase of the high jump. These drills range from simple to complex and are applicable to high jumpers at any level.

Ken Harnden takes athletes to the next level in our latest addition of our best selling Becoming a Champion instructional DVD series.

Coach Harnden begins with an 11-exercise functional warm-up that incorporates flexibility and prepares the muscles and joints for the rigors of sprint training. The warm-up leads into hurdle drills where Harnden takes you through six drills that are critical areas for developing sprint mechanics.

In Part 3: Block Starts, Harnden offers a technical breakdown for all aspects of the start that include proper block placement, "take your mark positioning" and for the set position. Harnden shares positioning cues to assure proper arm and shoulder alignment, as well as checks for proper leg positioning, all of which are essential for a successful transition from the start into the drive phase.
